The UK Column is calling on all our readers to boycott Ryanair.
In the leadup to the referendum vote in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty, the obnoxious Chief Executive of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, decided to give €500,000 in free flights and advertising to those promoting the Lisbon Treaty, nee European Constitution.
Not only was this undemocratic in the extreme, it was probably in breach of Irish law.
Voting ‘Yes’ in October was, “the f***ing sensible thing to do,” according to O’Leary. He went on to label opponents of the treaty as “idiot headbangers”, “unemployable headbangers” and “economic illiterates.”
If Ryanair’s appalling customer service, extortionate hidden charges, rude staff, and persistent advertising don’t convince you to spend your money elsewhere, then this should.
The strange aspect to it all is that last October, O’Leary had attacked the idea of forcing Ireland to vote on the Lisbon Treaty a second time. ”It seems that only in the European Union, Ireland and Zimbabwe are you forced to vote twice,” he said. ”The [first] vote should be respected. It is the only democratic thing to do,” he told the Sunday Business Post.
So what’s behind this change of heart? Has O’Leary’s sudden conversion to the “yes” camp got anything to do with his never ending attempts to aquire Aer Lingus perhaps?
