No Christian Mercy From Straw

Nobody gets more angry and frustrated when hearing about the soft sentencing of criminals in this new millenium than me. We have all read about it in the MSM - a moron gets drunk and drives his/her car over the speed limit and kills someone - and is out in the community again after less a than a year with a tag on their leg! These cases sicken us all, and make us despise our pathetic, out of touch judiciary. This type of thing happens so often now, it is almost mundane in its total insanity.

But then we have the complete reverse - cruel and inhumane punishment so extreme that is a crime in itself, in the eyes of many.

Ronald Biggs is not going to commit any more crimes. He is old (80) and extremely frail. A series of strokes and heart attacks have left him being fed through a tube and communicating using gestures and by pointing at letters on a card. He will probably not be here much longer! I actually believe that all prisoners who are desperately ill and dying should have special measures put in place for them so they can have some dignity - however bad they have been. And, I am sorry, this would have to apply to murderers, sex offenders and paedophiles along with all the others. Myra Hindley should have been treated differently in her last days too. There comes a point, for a Christian, where justice has been served, punishment is pointless and mercy must step in, if only for our own sakes. If we were truly a Christian country I would not need to be writing this. Sadly, we are not anymore.

Ann Widdicombe – she’s right, as usual.

Then we have Charles Bronson. What is this country playing at? This should never have been allowed to happen! A fortune has been spent on incarcerating him, he has his own custom built prison but, how much has been spent on rehabilitating him? He clearly has problems - mainly caused by becoming institutionalised by "the law" in the first place. And he is a powerful man, but surely something can be done? Get him out in the community, walking around normally - at his own art exhibitions for example, and stop this wicked, vindictive torture immediately!

The problem with both of these men is that they have "not demonstrated true repentence," to the parole board in Bronson's case, or to Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for "Justice?" Jack Straw's satisfaction in the case of Biggs.
What utter nonsense! Of course they are sorry. They are full of regret.
What do they have to do? Grovel on their knees?
Give us and these guys a break, soon, please!
