Peter Spencer ends his 52-day hunger strike

NSW grazier Peter Spencer has vowed to continue to push for changes to land clearing laws and property rights, after choosing to end his 52-day hunger strike atop a tower on his property.

Mr Spencer came down from the tower after midday on Wednesday, ending a long-running protest he's had over laws that prevent him clearing vegetation on his property not far from Cooma.

He's been calling for a royal commission into the laws and says other farmers are experiencing the same hurdles because of the laws.

He was lowered to the ground with the help of his son, 33-year-old Aaron Spencer.

"I was pleased to see that so many people were becoming aware of Australian issues," the grazier told reporters, shortly after he arrived on the ground, weak and unable to move.

"What I really want to get home to people is this country is worth it."

Mr Spencer then broke down into tears, before continuing.

"We have to get our country back in the hands of the people, it's the people's nation and that's what always made this such a wonderful place and to somehow, over the last 50 odd years... they've taken it from us."

Asked how he'll fight on the ground, he said "I haven't got that far in my thoughts yet, I've only been here for three minutes."

However he then said "let me tell you, if they thought I was tough up there, wait `til they see me get my strength. I'll be a pain in their side, I can assure you."

After being told opposition leader Tony Abbott had thrown his support behind him, Mr Spencer couldn't believe it.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce said he would push to have Mr Spencer come to Canberra for a rally when parliament resumes, a move the grazier said he would probably agree to.

After he was lowered, the grazier was helped into a four-wheel drive and driven back to his property before being taken to Cooma Base Hospital.

Mr Spencer's plight has grabbed nationwide attention, including that of the federal opposition.

"I think he's certainly highlighted the failures of the Labor government both here in NSW and federally to deal with this issue," Tony Abbott said.

Mr Spencer's protest was an important point that needed to be made, the opposition leader said.

Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce said the last thing that the public wanted was for any harm to come to Mr Spencer.

"We can continue this fight for property rights that have been taken off so many people because of these crazy environmental laws," Senator Joyce said.

The federal government was also relieved the 61-year-old decided to end his hunger strike.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said the government remained open to meeting with Mr Spencer.

"Mr Spencer has certainly made his point very clear.

"We're very pleased that, given the concerns for his health, that he's made this decision."

The NSW Farmers' Association, while also glad that Mr Spencer ended his hunger strike, said it would continue to fight on his behalf.

Association president Charles Armstrong said the lobby group understood the frustration many farmers felt over governments' ill-considered decisions relating to what can or can't be done with their land.

"This is an issue that the association has worked long and hard on, and one that we are committed to for as long as it takes to see real change," Mr Armstrong said.

Mr Spencer will remain at the emergency department of the Cooma Base Hospital overnight, under supervision.

January 5, 2010 is a historical day for Icelanders. The Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson had a tough decision to make, and difficult choices to make. To listen to the 23% of the nation that signed a petition calling on him to put the state guarantee for 5.4 billion dollars to be paid to the British and Dutch governments to a national referendum.

Or to ignore the nation and sign the bill for the government, after the bill had been passed through the parliament with a narrow vote on December 30, 2009 after months of acrimonious debate, tainted with secrecy and dishonesty on the part of the government. Every day throughout the debate, new information would emerge and documents would leak to local media or wikileaks.

Yesterday, the people of Iceland finally had a chance to have something to say about their fate, because if the state guarantee is accepted it will mean that Iceland will become like a third world country, spending its GDP largely on paying interest on foreign debt. Last summer, a bill for a state guarantee was passed that had a significant meaning not only for Iceland, but also for other nations around the world facing the same problems of private debt being forced on taxpayers.

The bill included a reasonable and fair way of handling the interest and the debt: Icelanders would pay, but only a certain percentage of their GDP, and if there were to be another financial black hole, they would not pay during that time. Thus it comes as no surprise that the Dutch and British governments reacted so swiftly with a condemnation of Iceland's citizens for having the audacity to think they have the right to exercise their democratic rights in deciding for themselves what is in the best economic interests of their nation.

Let's also put this debt into perspective: 320.000 people live in Iceland, each and every person on the island, including children and the elderly, the disabled and the poor, would have to pay around $30,000 under the bill. The danger if Icelanders will accept this enormous burden is that the entire welfare system would simply collapse with no money to run it. On January 5th the Icelandic president had the courage, backed up by his nation, to place the interest of the people before that of the banks.

Of course there has been an incredible spin by the government controlled media, attacking the nation and the president for this simple and fair demand. The UK and Dutch media were also full of misleading news, saying the nation had demanded not to pay, and that we would become isolated and there were even suggestions that the British navy should flex its muscles against this nation which has no military. As if the terrorist act they imposed on us was not enough during the darkest hour of our crises to bring us further down!

The spin is failing because people around the world are finally starting to hear our side of the story, and other suppressed nations have perhaps seen this as a sign that they can also rise up against the corpocracy in our world where those with the money have as a rule always won. Let's hope the nation will not been coaxed into fear of isolation and let's hope the people of the world will join in this experiment of letting the interest of the peoples rise above the interests of banks, corporations, and international bullies such as the IMF. As a result of their allegations Hostgator took down www.cpexposed.com. Around the same time Common Purpose also took direct action to ‘take down’ the videos posted by many other people on major web video hosting sites. We are sorry that this action has inconvenienced our readers and supporters, and we are pleased to be back on line.

In taking this action, based on allegations, the registered charity Common Purpose (a charity largely funded by the British tax payer) was able to undermine free speech on the internet for Britain and world-wide.

Common Purpose appears to feel that it is only a small number of people within UK and World-wide who are interested in their activities. In reality there is a huge and growing demand for information on this political charity within UK; that is why members of the general public are submitting Freedom of Information requests and making other independent and lawful enquiries in order to obtain and present the truth about Common Purpose and its activities. Aside from the independent enquiries made by members of the public, an increasing number of individuals within the public sector (Councillors, Officers and Civil Servants) are now concerned and are asking for more information on common purpose activities.

Naturally we are concerned that Common Purpose should feel unhappy with the publication of information about them and we are attempting to resolve the situation in an amicable way.

Iceland - the greedy EU want your fish

Referendum due after president rejects ‘Icesave’ repayments

Icelandic President Olafur Grimsson has called for a referendum to decide if the country should repay savers in the UK and the Netherlands who lost out when Icelandic bank accounts collapsed. (Quite right too, this is how government for the people, by the people, is supposed to work)

A bill, dubbed ‘Icesave’ after the failed private investment firm in question, was due to be signed on Tuesday and would have seen the Icelandic taxpayer reimbursing five billion dollars to luckless investors. (Luckless - the clue is in this expression, they gambled. They were perfectly happy to take a risk but are now whining like hell about it because their risk was - risky!? Why should the casino - called Iceland, pay 'em now they've lost?)

But because the bill was vetoed at the last minute, the decision will be in the hands of Iceland’s voters for a referendum decision.

It is only the second time in the Icelandic republic’s 65-year history that the president has vetoed a bill at the last minute.

The move to block the bill came after 60,000 Icelanders – a quarter of the country’s voters - signed a petition calling for the Icesave bill to be blocked. (Well done, good job!)

EU membership in jeopardy (wish Britain's was!)

Icelandic critics say Britain and the Netherlands (banking crooks)are using their EU(crooks') veto and IMF (crooks') voting power to bully the country's taxpayers into reimbursing savers who imprudently poured money into Icesave, a private firm that offered high interest rates. (YES!)

But supporters of the bill say that failure to pass it through risks jeopardizing much needed aid as well as the country’s aspirations to join the EU. (Iceland, you need to ditch these plans, pronto)

Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir (traitor) said the government was committed to honouring its debts. (Why? Bogus debts to crooks don't count!) She questioned whether the president had the right to force a referendum on such matters but did not suggest the government would try to avoid one.

"It is debatable whether it is politically and constitutionally correct for the president to use his right to submit the issue to a national referendum when it concerns an international issue such as Icesave where the government seeks to honour its international commitments," she said. Ms Sigurdardottir’s government had threatened to resign if the bill was not passed, throwing the country into yet more uncertainty as preparations are made for a referendum to take place.

Reactions from the UK and the Netherlands

The Dutch government said it was "very disappointed" and would demand an immediate explanation. (Shut up reptiles)

British Finance Minister Alistair Darling called on Iceland to honour its debts, especially in light of the country’s aspirations to become a full member of the European Union. Since the financial crisis - which hit the small island nation harder than most - EU membership has been high on Iceland’s priorities. (Well obviously not all the people's!)

"An agreement has been reached with us and the Dutch government and I really think it should be implemented because otherwise I think it will just make things far more difficult than they need be," Darling said. (Who's scared of you, eyebrows?)

Britain and the Netherlands (banking reptiles) have veto power over Iceland's EU membership bid and could block the entry negotiations. (Good, stay out Iceland. It is your only hope! They want your fish!)

"..Peter Spencer says that Federal Government has declared his 5,385 hectare property a carbon Sink without compensating him. Peter had never wanted to clear his land, but under the vegetation management act the entire property is rendered off limits to any form of development.

These effected Australian farmers have been responsible for virtually the entire burden of the Nation’s greenhouse gas emission reductions but their efforts worth billions of dollars have not been recognized or financially rewarded.

These farming families have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 70 million tonnes since 1990 and by 2010 the saving will be about 83.7million tonnes. To put that into context that is equivalent to eliminating the entire annual emissions of New Zealand or Ireland. Over that same period of time emissions from energy and transport have continued to skyrocket.

Peter’s hunger strike has gathered support from grassroots people from Australia, the US, UK, Pakistan and Malaysia. On the Peter Spencer Hunger Strike causes site over 150 people have been lobbying frantically to get the mainstream media to cover the story and for politicians to intervene on Peter’s behalf.

Peter’s supporters have been bombarding State and Federal Labor, Liberal and National Party Politicians and the mainstream media to bring attention to his cause.

But Peter’s story is being stonewalled by the mainstream media and Politicians of all colours and creeds. So far they have managed to have Peter’s story covered by 2GB’s Alan Jones with a live interview with Peter Spencer and his barrister Peter King by mobile phone on Tuesday morning and one with Alastair McRobert who is at the property with Peter onThursday morning and a 5 minute spot on Channel 9’s A Current affair on Thursday night (the video above).

Fairfax Media, News Corporation and the ABC have steadfastly refused to run the story except for The Telegraph which ran a small piece last Sunday on page 42 titled He’s the Darryl Kerrigan of Climate Change."
